Having successfully qualified as a Dental Technician straight from secondary school, Paul Wakelin, founder of Fluid Boat Services and long time windsurfer found working life in a Dental Laboratory too distracting whenever the wind blew.

Paul decided in 1993 to head west to Cornwall and a change of career to follow his passion afloat. Working at Windsport he gained intense experience both sailing and instructing across the dinghy and multihull fleets with a good measure of landyachting along the way. From instructor to manager Paul helped the Windsport team to be an industry leading UK sail training operation.

His next career move was to Laser Performance where his detailed and comprehensive knowledge of the Laser and Dart range was put to good use in the spare parts department where his great customer service was key. Over this whole period Paul had swapped his windsurfer for a Laser 5000 and then for the versatile Dart 18 to become one of the UK’s leading racers achieving podium success in the 120 boat fleet, 2007 Dart Worlds held at Lake Garda. A certain Billy Besson was 4th.

Having enjoyed his time at Laser Performance consolidation of accrued experience was aimed for with a return to study gaining a Business Degree (BSC) from the university of East Anglia. The plan was to now focus on sailing as competitive pleasure and find employment with his business skills. Starting Fluid Boat Services was a way of self funding through university, however that “proper” job never materialized as Fluid Boat Services quickly became a success as a composite repair specialist and Dart dealer.

Alongside existing business activity the opportunity then came to coach the UK Youth Multi-hull squad sailing then on the Hobie 16 and then SL16. Working as RYA Head Youth Catamaran Coach with the best young Cat sailors of the day Gold and bronze Medals were achieved at the ISAF Youth Worlds in 2007 / 2008.

The opportunity for a complete change then arose to head up the Oman Sail, performance Catamaran program, coaching full-time in Muscat, Oman 2009. Fluid Boat Services was moth balled and Paul worked closely with a tight group of Omani sailors taking his new team from novice through Hobie 16 success and onto coaching and coordinating a full International F18 Race Program. By 2012 the best Omani team were regularly achieving top ten results within the European race circuit on their F18 Nacra Infusions. The pinnacle of this program was a race win in the first qualifying race at the F18 Worlds in Long Beach, USA. Whilst leading their second qualifier race the Omani team suffered an injury to fingers requiring multiple stitches that ruled them out of the remaining regatta, a bittersweet season end.

After nearly four years from home it was time to go home. This has allowed Paul to yet again develop his own sailing getting to grips with his foiling Moth and catching up on race time on his Nacra Infusion F18. Also happily back in his role of RYA Head Youth Multi-hull Coach, coaching the UK Youth and working closely UKCRA helping grow a vibrant multihull program.

With the close relationship with Nacra and over 20 years of experience Fluid Boat Services are now very excited to have been awarded a full Nacra Dealership to be able to help service and empower all Multihull sailors in these exciting times… the future is fast, fun, on two hulls and flying!
